The Western Ghats is a biological treasure trove that is endangered, and it needs to be “protected and regenerated, indeed celebrated for its enormous wealth of endemic species and natural beauty” – says the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest’s High Level Working Group, whose much awaited report on the Ghats was presented to Ms. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of State (IC) for Environment & Forests, here today. The 10-member Working Group is headed by Dr. K.
The Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Dr. D Purandeswari held three bilateral meetings and signed one important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Costa Rica yesterday. She first met Ms. Daisy Maria Corrales Diaz, Costa Rica’s Minister of Health. Followed by it, she met Mr. Alejandro Cruz, Minister of Science and Technology, Costa Rica. Then in afternoon, she met Mr. Luis Liberman, Vice President of Costa Rica.
Following is the text of the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s address at the 4th Clean Energy Ministerial in New Delhi today:
“I am very pleased to inaugurate this Fourth Clean Energy Ministerial in New Delhi. This is the first time this Ministerial meeting has been convened in India. I take this opportunity to welcome all the participating Ministers and members of their delegations, and also the representatives of international organizations, the private sector and non-governmental organizations participating in this important meeting.
Dr. C.P. Joshi, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, reviewed here today the plan for award and completion of road works during the current Financial Year (FY) 2013-14. The plan has been prepared by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) along with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The thrust of the review meeting aimed at identifying steps for restoring the pace of award of road projects in the coming year. As a part of this exercise, scheme-wise targets were set for each month of the financial year.
The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have reviewed international prices of crude oil and petroleum products during the 1st Fortnight of April 2013. Accordingly, the under-recovery on High Speed Diesel (HSD) applicable for 2nd fortnight of April effective 15.04.2013 has declined marginally to Rs 6.42/Litre.
“Our 12th Five Year Plan proposals for the next five years (2012-17) seek a capacity addition of 30 GW, of which 25 GW is expected to come from wind and solar energy”, said Sh. R.P. Watal, Secretary MNRE while inaugurating a one day Workshop on Grid Integration of Renewable Energy & Rooftop Solar in Urban Areas in collaboration with Govt. of Germany in New Delhi today. Wind and solar are location-specific and not distributed uniformly.

India-Finland have identified several key areas of collaboration in sustainable development for mutual benefits in the oil & gas sector. This includes specific projects in Solar Energy applications for Oil & Gas Projects, Biofuels & Algae based biofuels research and water and waste water management.
The Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and the Protocol between the Republic of India and Malta for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income is in force since 8th February, 1995. Both India and Malta have renegotiated the Agreement to bring in line with international standards, change in domestic laws and changed economic scenario.
The Minister of Defence and National Security of the Republic of Maldives, Mr. Mohamed Nazim had a one hour long meeting with the Defence Minister Shri AK Antony at South Block on Monday, 15 April, 2013, followed by a meeting with the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee and CAS and the Vice Chiefs of Army and Navy and DG, Coast Guard. The Maldivian Minister is on a 4 day official visit to India during which he would be visiting military establishments in various parts of the country.
Shri Sachin Pilot, Minister for Corporate Affairs, during his three –day official visit to Sweden last week had a meeting with the Foreign Minister of Sweden, Shri Carl Bildt and Swedish Minister for Financial Markets, Shri Peter Norman.
The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05 = 100) for the month March, 2013 rose by 0.2 percent to 170.6 (provisional) from 170.2 (provisional) for the previous month.
INFLATION
The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2004-05 for the month of February 2013 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. IIP is compiled using data received from 16 source agencies viz.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation releases Consumer Price Indices (CPI) on base 2010=100 for all-India and States/UTs separately for rural, urban and combined every month with effect from January, 2011.
Provisional indices for the month of March 2013 and also final indices for February 2013 are being released with this note for all-India and for States/UTs.
The National Food Security Mission (NFSM), a mega scheme of the Ministry of Agriculture, has been able to encourage farmers to adopt scientific knowhow and modern practices, leading to perceptible rise in production of food grains.
The area-focused scheme Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI) also has resulted in increase in rice area, higher adoption of technology, and greater participation of small and marginal farmers.
